Short answer: CL is not always an error. Midea's US split-system manual uses CL for a filter-cleaning reminder and for Active Clean on supported models. A reminder briefly flashes at start-up; a selected cleaning cycle lasts longer. Match your model and what happened before the display appeared, then follow its own cleaning or reset instructions.
Two uses of the same letters

Do not start by turning off the breaker. Ask whether you selected a cleaning function, and whether CL flashes briefly or stays on during a cycle. Record that with the model number.
| Situation | Meaning in the cited Midea manual |
|---|---|
| CL flashes after 240 hours, then returns to the previous display after 15 seconds | Optional filter-cleaning reminder |
| CL appears after Active Clean is selected; cycle runs 20-45 minutes before automatic shutoff | Model-dependent Active Clean function |
| Different model, unexplained display or another fault at the same time | Meaning not established by this table; use the exact manual |
These times belong to the cited manual. They are not universal mini split timers.
If it is a filter reminder
Midea says to clean the filter. Turn the unit off as your manual directs before accessing user-removable filters. Do not reach into the cabinet or touch wiring. Follow the exact filter instructions rather than washing every filter, since specialty filters can require different care.
After cleaning and reinstalling the filters, reset the reminder only as that model directs. The cited Midea manual describes pressing LED four times or MANUAL CONTROL three times. This is a model-dependent procedure, not an all-brand shortcut. A different controller may assign another function to that sequence.
The reminder can return at restart if it was not reset. Resetting a counter is not cleaning the filter. See cleaning mini split filters for owner-care limits.
If you selected Active Clean
Midea describes a heat-exchanger cleaning cycle using freezing, thawing and warm-air drying. On supported models, CL shows during the cycle, followed by automatic shutoff after 20-45 minutes. The manual says Active Clean is not available on the multi-zone systems it covers.
Carrier's 40MAHB owner manual also describes CL during a selected Active Clean function on supported models. That does not establish identical buttons or availability across either brand.
If you selected it knowingly, follow the expected timing and instructions. If you did not select it, or normal operation does not return as the manual describes, ask support. Do not assume an indefinitely displayed CL is harmless.
Do not skip routine maintenance
An automatic cycle does not replace every part of filter care or professional service. The heat exchanger, blower and accessible filters are not the same surfaces. Do not spray chemicals into the unit, dismantle it or use an unsupported cycle.
Senville's LETO reference lists CL as a filter reminder showing for 15 seconds at power-on. It does not establish a universal Senville reset command. Use the exact model's instructions, not Midea's LED sequence.
When to get help
Ask support if CL stays on unexpectedly, the unit will not heat or cool afterward, or another code appears. A burning smell, repeated breaker trip or indoor water leak is not just a reminder. Follow the safety instructions and call a qualified technician.
Keep the cleaning date and manual with your equipment record. Use mini split code lookup when the display is a fault rather than a maintenance status.
